Christian Self-Examination

Believers are commanded to examine themselves honestly by the standard of God's word to determine whether their profession of faith is confirmed by obedient conduct. This examination should focus first on one's own sins and inward condition, producing correction and repentance rather than blame-shifting, hypocrisy, or preoccupation with the failures of others.

Misconceptions We Reject

  • Self-examination means judging salvation solely by emotions
  • Self-examination earns acceptance with God
  • The command authorizes obsessive introspection without looking to Christ
  • Examining oneself removes the need for biblical correction from others
  • Visible religious appearance alone proves genuine faith
