Divine Decree

Before time began, God ordained everything that would ever happen. His eternal plan governs all of history — every event, every decision, every outcome. Nothing catches Him off guard or falls outside His purpose, because He decreed it all from the start.

Interpretation Guardrails

  • •God eternally ordained all that comes to pass, and nothing falls outside His sovereign purpose.
  • •God's decree is wise, purposeful, and never a reaction to unforeseen events.
  • •God's sovereignty over all things must not be interpreted in a way that makes Him morally defective or changeable.

Misconceptions We Reject

  • God merely reacted to human history after it unfolded.
  • Some events occur outside of God's eternal plan and catch Him by surprise.
  • God's decree means His purposes are uncertain or dependent on creatures to succeed.

What We Reject

Open Theism (No Eternal Decree)

The Claim

There is no eternal decree by which God foreordained all historical events. God's plan unfolds dynamically as He responds to human choices in real time.

Scripture explicitly teaches that God ordained all events before time began. The decree is eternal, not reactive. If God merely responds, He is not God — He is a participant, not the Sovereign.

Original Language: The Greek 'energeō' (G1754) in Ephesians 1:11 — 'Him who works all things according to the counsel of His will' — is the present participle: God is continuously energizing all things. 'Proetheto' (G4388) in Romans 9:11 — 'the purpose of God according to election' — is aorist middle: God set this purpose for Himself, independent of any human action.
